Welfare in Malaysia Across Three Decades: Have We Managed to Get Rid of Extreme Poverty & Inequality?

Synopsis:
Absolute poverty in Malaysia declined from 16.5 % in 1989 to 0.2 % in 2019, making the rate the lowest in the world. The new 2020 methodology however, has adjusted the 2019 poverty rate to 5.6 percent. Has Malaysia really managed to get rid of poverty? How does data on poverty affect the way we handle the real issues on poverty? How is poverty related to the rising inequalities facing many economies and how are poverty and inequality affected by covid 19? Would Behavioral Economics make a difference to the way we handle these issues?

This inaugural discourse on Humanistic Economy organised by Forum Ekonomi Manusiawi, in collaboration with Institut Darul Ehsan IDE and Oxford Intellect, UK will present the 2020 Report on “Welfare in Malaysia Across Three Decades” published by the Khazanah Research Institute. It will bring an analysis on whether Malaysia has managed to get rid of extreme poverty and inequality and why the answers to the questions raised here are important and have policy implications not just to Malaysia but the world over.

We invite shared reflections from the audience as we explore the pressing issues on poverty and inequality and their possible solutions within our society and economy.
