KUALA LUMPUR: Online petitions and polls have cropped up since Friday to gauge public sentiment over rumours of a state of emergency to be declared in the country.

In a survey titled “Rakyat Malaysia Bersuara/Malaysians Speak” by think- tank Institut Darul Ehsan (IDE), close to 80 per cent (77.39 per cent or 39,587) of Malaysians said “No” to an emergency declaration.

The remaining 11,560 respondents (or 22.61 per cent) meanwhile voted in favour of it.

The survey was conducted from 4pm to midnight on Oct 24 involving Malaysians from various backgrounds.

“As of 12 midnight, 51,147 respondents participated in the poll that that was shared electronically via WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Email, websites and Telegram linked to the IDE E-Survey System,” IDE said.

The poll consisted of only two questions – Do you agree with the declaration of emergency, and what is the best option for Malaysians.

For the second question, 49.8 per cent (25,469 respondents) said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should be named Prime Minister, 32.49 per cent (16,617) said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should remain as the premier.

The remaining 17.71 per cent (9,061) of respondents said the Parliament should be dissolved and a General Election announced.

“Based on the poll analysis, IDE found that the majority who support the declaration of emergency are those who also tend to support Muhyiddin to remain as Prime Minister.

“Those who reject the emergency, were more likely to choose Anwar as Prime Minister,” IDE said.

The poll is still on as of press time at https://ideselangor.com/v2/2020/10/24/suara-rakyat-malaysia-malaysians-s…

Meanwhile, an online petition calling for the government to halt its plans to declare a state of Emergency in Malaysia has gathered close to 25,000 signatures in just two days.

The petition titled “NO to State of Emergency in Malaysia: Avoid Psychological & Economic Devastation” on change.org was addressed to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Council of Rulers and the Malaysian government.

The petition, started by Dr Brendan Gomez listed three key reasons as to why Malaysia should avoid implementing a state of emergency.

“A state of Emergency will stem collective participation where only certain leaders are allowed to provide ‘solutions’ to our current pandemic, or ‘permission’ for what they believe will work.

“It takes away such confidence whereby the government is seen as authoritarian, ambiguous, unstable, and punitive.

“Feeling already imprisoned by Covid, a State of Emergency will be the final nail in the coffin for the mental wellbeing of our society, creating even greater restrictions psychologically and practically for many aspects of daily functioning,” it read.

As of 10.50am today, 24,340 people have signed the petition, closing in on its target of 25,000 signatures.

This petition is just one of many other online petitions with similar pleas to the Malaysian government.
