JOINT STATEMENT
by the Committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation (CAYC) and Asian Youth Council (AYC)
on 2023 General Election in Cambodia
In response to the invitation of the National Election Committee through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, representatives from Committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation, Asian Youth Council and our affiliates observed 2023 General Election of the Kingdom of Cambodia on 23rd July 2023.
Before the Election Day, our delegation were briefed by the NEC about Cambodia’s Election Law and relevant legislations. We also visited some places in the capital city of Phnom Penh, observed the election campaign and met with some stakeholders.
On the Election Day, our delegation went to observe a number of polling stations in Phnom Penh and some nearby provinces. We noted that many Cambodian voters arrived early and were queuing up in an orderly manner looking happy in front of the polling stations. The process of voting was conducted smoothly in line with the rules and regulations.
During our observation, our team recognized that the officials at all polling stations were competent and performed their duties well to protect the election process and provide the safe environment for voters, members of political parties, local and international observers and members of the media.
Our delegation along with representatives from various political parties and local and international observers were invited to take part in the vote counting. The process was conducted manually and carefully. If there was any doubt, the polling officials re-verify it promptly. We were very impressed to know that the turnout was over 80 percent
Our delegation would like to extend our great appreciation to National Election Committee of Cambodia (NEC) who managed the 2023 General election in an open, fair and peaceful manner. The NEC work was a showcase of good practice of a democratic process.
Our delegation consider the 2023 General Election being conducted is transparent, free and fair.
We hope that such democratic Election will serve Cambodian people’s interest for their future, development, peace, and stability.
