Malaysians are generally aware of the meeting between His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong with the Cabinet Ministers led by the Prime Minister Tan Sri Dato’ Hj. Muhyiddin Bin Hj. Mohd. Yassin on Friday  23rd October 2020.

Mainstream media, social media and print media have been reporting that the goverment has proposed a proclamation of emergency to deal with the current situation. Istana Negara’s media statement has confirmed that the meeting took place and has announced that His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong will discuss the proposal by the government in a joint meeting with the Malay Rulers which is expected to take place on Sunday, 25th October 2020.

Pursuant to the interest shown by the public, Institut Darul Ehsan (IDE) has conducted a virtual poll, “Malaysians Speak” via WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Email, websites and Telegrams. The poll is linked to our E-Survey System. The respondents comprises Malaysians from diverse backgrounds. The poll opened from 4:00 pm to 12:00 midnight (8 hours) on Saturday, 24 October 2020.

As of 12:00 midnight 51,147 unique respondents participated in this poll. The results of the poll are as follows:

1.The highest number of responses was recorded between 8:00 pm and 10:00 pm. IDE monitored the responses every 30 minutes to verify their validity.

2.QUESTION (1): Do you agree with the declaration of emergency?

a. Yes : 22.61% (11,560 respondents)
b. No : 77.39% (39,587 respondents)

3.QUESTION (2): What is the best option for Malaysians?

a. TS Muhyiddin Yassin to stay as Prime Minister : 32.49% (16,617 respondents)
b. DS Anwar Ibrahim to be appointed as Prime Minister : 49.80% (25,469 respondents)
c. Dissolution of parliament and General Election : 17.71% (9,061 respondents)

4.Based on the analysis, IDE finds that the majority of those supporting the declaration of emergency  also tend to support TS Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as Prime Minister. However, those who reject the emergency, are more likely to choose DS Anwar Ibrahim as Prime Minister.

5.Only 17.71% of the respondents voted for the dissolution of Parliament and proceed with a general election.
